by C. P. Cavafy
‘Had I wished, I should today be who knows how many times a millionaire–but I didn’t dare.’
C. P. Cavafy’s single short story is a gothic fiction the likes of which are to be found only in E. A. Poe or E. T. A. Hoffmann. Functioning as a tale-within-a-tale, it relates a peculiar nightly visit and the promise of a grand treasure. Things get messy when the visit takes place in broad daylight. An Alexandrian tale, appropriately set near the house of Muhammad Ali of Egypt.
